PLY, a bustling bar, pizza hangout and art space
Managing the press for new Manchester bar, restaurant and creative space PLY, Sundae’s campaign has taken in wood-fired Neopolitan pizzas and speed-illustrated cocktails, an outward facing multi-media exhibition, Pizzoetropes and more, much more!
To build anticipation ahead of the opening, PLY used its huge windows to host #PLYin90Seconds, an outward facing exhibition challenging creatives from around the world to create 90-second films about pizza.
For the exhibition launch event we turned our office into a bar, with Will Tramp! playing one deck armchair set, and invited friends, family and press along, generating coverage in We Heart, Emerald Street, Design Week, Tusk, Manchester’s Finest, Northern Quarter Manchester and more.
The official venue launch in March 2014 saw two days of special preview events, capped off with the official launch party, which welcomed PLY to the whole neighbourhood generating huge interest once again in key national and regional press including Manchester Evening News, Shortlist, Design My Night, Viva, Manchester Confidential, Olive, Stylist and Taste of Manchester.
Since launch, PLY’s rich calendar of exhibitions has featured international names including illustrator Will Broome, artist and Pizzoetrope pioneer Andrew Salomone and textile artist Kayla Matthes, along with the world’s largest collection of pizza boxes from pizza lover Scott Wiener.
Working with such an incredible calibre of art, curated by PLY’s own Beki Rymsza, ensured PLY was covered in the national arts and design press, with some great pieces in Design Week, The Double Negative, Creative Boom and The Skinny.
Another interesting project is the ever-evolving Doodle Wall, a long-term initiative intended to give local, Manchester based artists the platform to showcase their work. This opened the door for us to push local illustration to the regional press and with some fantastic coverage popping up in City Life Extra, Manchester Gossip and VIVA Online.
With the art programme in mind, we felt it was imperative that we made it an integral part of our own festival, Design Manchester. So, it became the launch venue for DM 15 when Swifty’s Unfinished Business opened at PLY. A large-scale installation of iconic and appropriated imagery by prolific graphic artist Ian ‘Swifty’ Swift taking over the venue and marking his return to Manchester after nearly 30 years. As part of the event Swifty took part in an exclusive talk delving into his creative mind and maverick working methods.
This gained some amazing coverage on behalf of the venue and the festival simultaneously, plus created a huge buzz on Twitter and Instagram. Brilliant pieces appeared in We Heart, Creative Tourist and the MEN.
PLY is the gift that keeps on giving, as every event has the potential to be creative and have a huge point of difference. We work very closely with the marketing team to devise and promote regular events including everything from cocktail-themed speed-drawing contest Speedy Cocktalez to Happy New Beer, PLY’s 2016 celebration of craft ale. Watch this space!
