In the Woods With Noisily Festival

Yesterday we made the exciting journey down to Barkestone Woods, Lincolnshire, as we had the pleasure of hosting the official press tour for the 10th anniversary of Noisily Festival, welcoming a host of journalists and bloggers from across the UK, and giving them a glimpse into the festival’s soul.

Sundae has worked closely with the team at Noisily on a bespoke comms campaign over the last 10 months, taking in key announcements such as the new site, the anniversary, the official line-up, its spectacular arts programme, revealing Mind Body Soul, the transformative, heart opening wellness programme, as well as telling the beautiful stories of some of the people behind the magic.

It was so wonderful to see the project come to life and to experience the stunning landscape of Coney Woods; the lush greenery served as the perfect backdrop for the enchanting festival-world that unfolded before our eyes, and we could not wait to explore.

The press tour kicked off with a palpable buzz in the air as we embarked on the immersive journey into the realm of music, wellness, and art. Introducing press to Mind Body Soul, the festival’s sanctuary for holistic wellbeing, we offered an exclusive workshop with trailblazing meditation programme Lumenate which left participants feeling recharged, enlightened, and somewhat curious to find out more.

Walking through the festival grounds, we were joined by Noisily co-founder Charles Audley who talked us through the different music stages and how they were put together in order to optimise the sound quality in such a unique setting, as well as arts director Ruth Herbert who stepped in to introduce the press to larger-than-life installations and interactive sculptures that created an immersive dreamscape.

Across the full campaign, we secured lots of fantastic, varied coverage including features with Glamour Magazine, Conde Nast Traveller, Stand Out Magazine, Total Production International, Broke Magazine, Data Transmission, DJ Revolution, The Festivals and Leicester Mercury, as well as a series of interview features in collaboration with BBC Radio Leicester who also came along to broadcast live from the woods.

It has been a delight to be a part of this extraordinary event – the collective energy onsite and the fusion of music, wellness and art creates an atmosphere and experience that is unparalleled and unforgettable!

BBC Philharmonic x The Royal Northern College of Music – Future Music #4

As part our work with the wonderful BBC Philharmonic we have had the absolute pleasure of looking after the communications campaign around their fascinating concert within The Royal Northern College of Music’s festival, Future Music #4.

The RNCM’s Future Music Festival explores the boundaries and intersections between science and art. Produced by PRiSM, the Royal Northern College of Music’s Centre for Practice & Research in Science & Music, Future Music #4 featured ground-breaking world premieres from composers Robert Laidlow and Emily Howard, performed by the BBC Philharmonic and brought to life by conductor Vimbayi Kaziboni.

This performance marked the 5th anniversary of PRiSM, the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Northern College of Music and the BBC Philharmonic’s Centenary. It celebrated the ongoing collaboration between PRiSM and BBC Philharmonic through their shared interest in science and technology.

Our aim with this campaign was to amplify the forward thinking, experimental nature of the orchestra, as well as the incredible work of RNCM’s PRiSM; with such unique material and ground-breaking performances comes the opportunity to tap into some different media sectors that would usually be outside of the orchestral music realm, so that is what we did.

Following an in-depth pitching process to some targeted specialist media, we achieved a detailed video feature documenting the concert that went out post-event on New Scientist,  with listings, previews and interview features on I Love Manchester, About Manchester, BBC Radio Manchester respectively.

Working on this concert further opened our eyes and minds to possibilities via the link between science and art, and in particular the infinite potential of music for reinvention and incorporation of ground-breaking technologies.

We will be following the BBC Philharmonic’s future journey with interest in the excited anticipation of what it can show us next, and if the notion takes you, you should do the same.

100 Years of the BBC Philharmonic

Just a couple of days ago on Saturday 15th October, we had the absolute privilege of watching our lovely client, the BBC Philharmonic, as the orchestra celebrated its centenary year with a concert at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall showcasing what it does best: sharing music with the masses by continuing to laud Beethoven’s enduring popularity and championing rarely performed and newly written music.

Conductor Eva Ollikainen and soprano Héloïse Werner presented the world premiere of a new work by Erland Cooper in tribute to Peter Maxwell Davies’s long and close association with the orchestra, in a concert including Gipps’s Overture ‘Chanticleer’ and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with soprano Tuuli Takala, mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately, tenor Steve Davislim, and bass-baritone Simon Shibambu and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus.

Unsurprisingly, the simply stunning performance received a standing ovation in the equally stunning venue from an audience that was evidently as blown away as we were by what they had just witnessed.

For the campaign around this concert, we wanted to celebrate the orchestra, its longevity, and most of all its people; the players that make the music possible. We worked with the amazing team at the BBC Philharmonic to find out about the incredible stories that existed within the group, of which there were many.

From the longest serving members of the orchestra and their experiences, to players whose parents had been been in the orchestra before them (and in some cases at the same time), to married couples who met in the orchestra and went on to have families – it was clear that music was at the heart of it it all, and was responsible for the palpable family feeling running through the orchestra.

After telling the media about these beautiful stories, we were inundated with regional and national support, and listings, previews and interview features appeared on I Love Manchester, About Manchester, Manchester WorldYourMcr, The Manc, BBC Radio Manchester, and BBC North West Tonight, as well as yesterday’s BBC Breakfast.

Our work with the BBC Philharmonic is well up there with our most enjoyed; the people and the music make it what it is, and we love nothing more than to discover stories like these and share them out into the world.

If you haven’t been to watch the orchestra yet, we would advise making that change.

Ten Days in the Life of Shangri-La Glastonbury

Ten Days in the Life of the Shangri-Family at Worthy Farm

As we rolled onto the Shangri-La site, just a few days ahead of the opening of the most anticipated Glastonbury Festival of all time, it felt like we were arriving home after a long trip away.

The welcome from the whole team was as warm as the beaming June sun; we were instantly part of the production crew family and couldn’t wait to ditch our bags in our caravans, join the movement, and get to work. We hung our gold shimmer, gave our cabin a bit of Sundae zhuzh, plugged in our laptops, and our on site press and comms office was a-go-go.

Sundae last worked from the Farm in 2019 at the last Glasto before the ‘you-know-what’ came skulking into our lives and stole our fun in an unprecedented sneak attack, but, unbeknown to the unwanted and unwitting virus, that three year break only fuelled the creativity and increased the hunger of this unstoppable group of incredible people.

Kaye Dunnings, Robin Collings and Chris ‘Tofu’ Mackmeikan MBE are the collective driving force behind all things Shangri-La, and with the help of their powerhouse team, and some very special new recruits, we worked together to create Lost Horizon, a VR experience including digital twins of some of Shangri-La’s stages, and some brand new creations, that hosted some of the biggest artists on the planet and creating parties for the people while the real world was at a stand-still.

When real life began to re-emerge, we opened Lost Horizon HQ, a venue like no other, situated in the heart of Bristol, that blurs all kinds of lines between real life and virtual reality. Coined ‘Shangri-La’s creative den’, the place well and truly earns its moniker with every show, exhibition and fearless implementation of each boundary pushing idea.

The Lost Horizon concept is here to stay; an acceleration into the future that has quickly become our present, and its distinctive touches were an intrinsic part of the 2022 Shangri-La world, with advanced tech, VR crossover and even an AR robot artist populating the Shangriverse, alongside the art, music and community Shangri-La is infamous for.

This year’s theme was ‘We the People’, an adventure into possibility, exploring human connection in all its unique forms – past, present and future. From sitting around a fire-pit sharing past experiences to delving into emerging new technologies to connect globally, celebrating humanity – what makes us human, and how we can collectively make change.

Lost Horizon presents Party Nerds gave us the chance to come full circle and bring our VR project to the field, whilst elsewhere in the Shangriverse we met Ai-Da Robot, the world’s first ultra-realistic artist robot (a dab hand at painting portraits), and entered Condense Reality’s Holo-booth where holograms of us, created in real time via motion capture, were live streamed into a virtual world (we know, right!).

First seen in the metaverse, Nomad was a new-for-2022 radical area brought to you by a powerful collection of the UK’s most inspiring and subversive minds, while FLINT venue The Sistxrhood was back in the field empowering and showcasing womxn, non-binary and gender-nonconforming artists in the music, arts, culture and nightlife industries.

The mighty Truth Stage was shouting loud to unite the tribes! Yours Truthfully, the ground-breaking exhibition curated by our very own Design Manchester co-creative director Malcolm Garrett and Shangri-La creative director Kaye Dunnings for Lost Horizon Festival 2020 broke out from the multiverse and took over the Truth Stage’s IRL giant billboards.

This year’s eclectic music acts spanned from Fatboy Slim, to Goldie, to Kae Tempest, to DRS, to Grove, to Fumez the Engineer, to Mandidextrous, to Craig Charles, to Warmduscher, to K.O.G, to Los Dedos, plus WAY too many more to list, while Earache Records took over with acts including Brass Against, Bob Vylan, Nova Twins and Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs.

The force that is the Gas Tower returned with its renowned digital progression and 360° sound and exclusive screenings of Ai WeiWei’s film Yours Truly, as well as a BBC Essential mix Live feat. Bonobo & ABSOLUTE and a very special Sportsbanger x Shangri-La Megarave featuring headliners playing B2B with NHS and Care Workers, mad collaborations and serious high energy vibes.

As if that wasn’t enough, a surprise booking of Ukrainian Eurovision Song contest winners, Kalush Orchestra saw them take to the Truth Stage late on Friday night to produce a performance that induced pure love amongst an already delighted crowd, attracting news crews from all over the world.

All of this (and a helluva lot more!) piqued the interest of national and regional press across the board with features, interviews and reviews appearing in NME, DJ Mag, the Times, the Telegraph, the Guardian, METRO, iNews, Sky News, the Independent, Evening Standard, BBC News Online, ITV.com, Tech Register, BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music and Louder Sound amongst many others.

This year we worked with an amazing team, including the brilliant Dulcie at Chuffed Digital, to deliver the socials for Shangri-La, creating strategy, content and engagement for the festival and beyond. We’ve gained thousands of new followers, and are heading towards our goal of a million impressions. We’ve got content for days so follow us at @shangrilaglasto for insight and updates!

The last ten days living as part of the Shangri-La family have to be considered some of the best of our lives; the love, the creativity, the stories, the family feeling, the joy, the music and, above all: we, the people, made it what it was – something beautiful and unforgettable.

Thank you, Shangri-La…it is an honour to be part of you.

Sounds From The Other City 2022

It’s official, festival season is back (!), and last weekend we well and truly kicked off the season in style attending Salford’s very own Sounds From The Other City, which took place on a sunny Sunday during the early May bank holiday weekend.

As a newbie to Greater Manchester, I’ve been so eager to attend my first festival as an official resident of the North West and explore all that Salford has to offer. As an avid live-music fan, with a working background in music, I was really intrigued by the vast amount of independent venues that Salford has on offer across Chapel Street and beyond.

Sounds From The Other City has no less than 22 stages to explore, with over 125 eclectic, enticing acts performing across the event…and that’s just the live music. Dotted around the streets of Salford you will also find live dance performers, art installations, and my personal favourite, the Compact Disco group, a travelling discotheque complete with an oversized disco ball created from discarded CDs and disco lights projecting from all angles. There is also a total of 10 different food sites to choose from, including Porta’s (Salford’s finest tapas bar) seriously delicious chorizo BBQ, and Ohh La La’s Loaded Fries van (I devoured the truffle & parmesan fries, requesting extra truffle, obviously). To say we had a jam-packed day ahead of us would be an understatement.

Once on site, with our SFTOC wristbands on one hand and drink in the other, we headed for the Regent Trading Estate marquee to catch dream team Gracie T & Vindya. The area was packing out very quickly, with Salford’s young music crowd, small children sporting huge ear defenders, and dogs (yes, even dogs) all in attendance, ready to enjoy the bank holiday festivities.

We were then able to catch a glimpse of Mali Hayes, who graced us with her dreamy vocals, before making our way down to Fivefourstudios where we were set to host the official press event for the festival. Welcoming attendees to the stylish Fivefourstudios bar, we were delighted to be joined by the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music, the Arts Council, and The Manc.

Once our press event had wrapped, it was time to enjoy some more live music. We headed over to St Philip’s Church to catch Freya Beer (there’s always something really quite enchanting about watching a live performance in such a grand venue) and ended our night back at the Regent Trading Estate to catch the glorious Lovescene perform to a heaving venue full of elated fans, who threw flowers onto the stage in adoration.

We couldn’t leave without one last visit to the Trading Estate marquee for our final dance-off. Bank Holiday Monday came as a total blessing, giving our feet the opportunity to recover!

In the lead up to the festival, we had the pleasure of working alongside the ultra-talented organisers, as we announced this years’ sterling line-up to press. As anticipated, the announcement received a hugely positive response, with outlets such as DIY Magazine, New! Magazine, and BBC Introducing (to name a few) showing their support for the event. The Manc also shared this ultra-fantastical promo video across their socials in the run up to the festival.

Bring on SFTOC 2023!

Prima drops first full-length album ‘Scandalous’

Midication Recordings’ artist Prima is back with her first full-length project Scandalous; a truly accomplished collection of top tier R&B coming straight out of Manchester, and we at Sundae looked after the full communications campaign for the release.

Dropping just yesterday, Scandalous is 100% independent, 100% authentic and 100% Mancunian; Prima’s soft and silky vocals effortlessly deliver raw and relatable lyrics, taking us on a strong young female’s journey of self-discovery, self-love and the inevitable ups and downs of the hectic, emotional roller coaster we call life.

Fully produced by our friend JSD, Head Honcho at Midication, this is an album to get lost and found in; it will make you question yourself, your relationships, what it all means, and all-the-while hitting you in the gut with a soul-filled reminder of why we fall in love in the first place.

Prima is at the forefront of Manchester’s burgeoning R&B movement; she joined Midication in the label’s very early days and has since been making huge waves with tracks featuring on PrettyLittleThing’s (PLT) ad campaigns with Molly-Mae Hague and Tamara Francesconi, with a very special project alongside the global fashion giant soon to be announced.

She has amassed hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify and the Manchester singer has also performed on the BBC Music Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds Festival, been playlisted by Rinse FM, and has seen the music video for her track ‘100’ premiere on Earmilk, as well as an artist feature on DJ Ace’s BBC Radio 1 Xtra show, and one of her songs being handed the ‘Track of the Week’ title on BBC Radio 1.

We really couldn’t wait to share the news of this outstanding album, and our excitement was more than matched by Manchester’s media with brilliant coverage appearing in Manchester World, The Manc, The Manc Audio, Manchester’s Finest, About Manchester and Unlock Manchester

The future is set to be incredibly exciting for Prima, JSD and the full team at Midication Recordings… and we cannot wait to see what happens next.

Scandalous is available on all platforms now and you can catch Prima at Beehouse, Deansgate Locks, Manchester on Sat 21st May for her album live launch show, tickets will be on sale soon.

Live and direct from London Remixed Festival

We’ve just left the opening night of London Remixed Festival and we’re mopping our party perspiring brows so we can tell you all about it… What. A. Night.

Everyone’s noticed a certain energy in the room at gigs at the moment, right? The palpable happiness and excitement as music fans are elated to be able to witness live performance first hand, once again? Well, tonight has definitely not been an exception; the atmosphere was electric, the venue was jam-packed and everyone in attendance was well up for losing themselves in the music.

The evening has been dedicated to a celebration of 25 years of Continental Drifts with a brass band spectacular including sets from DJ Chris Tofu, DJ Dials Davis, Intergalactic Brasstronauts, London Brass All Stars, New Car Smell, as well as the launch of Festival Lab, a new stage curated by a group of producers from its just-as-new course of creatives.

It brings us all at team Sundae so much joy to welcome London Remixed back with a full live line-up at Rich Mix Arts Centre and, after a year spent in virtual reality, the simply incredible members of the Festival team have challenged themselves to kick global London into the future with a live music culture clash by a wealth of artists and partners from around the world… and something is telling us that they will succeed!

The two-day indoor festival is showcasing over 25 cutting edge bands and DJs from a range of cultures offering up the best in Latin Grooves, African Rhythms, Tropical Bass, Vintage-Remix, Desert Remix, Balkan Beats, Urban Roots, Acoustic Soundclash and Brass Band Remix, as well as offering creativity, fun and madness, complete with a buzzing atmosphere, but without the mud, rain or hassle of camping.

As clients and communications campaigns go, Remixed is well and truly up there with our faves due to the variety of media that the all encompassing programme allows us to engage; we’ve seen amazing support in the form of previews, features, interviews and listings from DESIblitz, London Live, London TV Online, Hackney Gazette, East London Advertiser, Rhythm Passport, BBC Radio London, BBC Asian Network, Time Out London, The Londonist and The Weekly Gleaner, amongst others.

The Continental Drifts Festival Lab programme is designed to support the next generation of event producers. Over 12 weeks, the young producers learn all about production, programming, marketing, sponsorship and audience development, culminating in them planning their own programme of activity tonight at the festival under the collective title, The Vybe Engyneerz.

Such is the innovative nature of the programme, it has attracted the attention of our friends at Total Production International and Access All Areas, who are keen to find out more about it and how it is at the forefront of securing the future of music festival production in the UK following the uncertain time we have all been through. The Vybe Engyneerz will be having interviews with both publications next week.

Right now, we’re all off for a disco nap because tomorrow will see four incredible stages filled with an eclectic selection of live acts, performers and DJs playing music from around the world meeting the 21st Century; from Future Arabic music, African, Latin remix all the way to new UK folk and very funky DJ’s, with sets from Daytimers, James Riley & Rooftop Assembly and Mina & Bryte, plus LOADS more.

We’ll catch you in the dance x

ATG’s Swansea Arena launches with Royal Blood and a show-stopping visual art project

Well, as weeks go… this one has been pretty special! We have just returned from beautiful, sunny Swansea, where Royal Blood became the first music act to play as part of Swansea Arena’s launch season, in a special event ahead of their biggest European tour to date.

The brand-new Arena is simply stunning and Royal Blood were the perfect opening act; they showcased the state-of-the-art technical and sound capabilities with an electrifying show that very nearly blew the roof off the place as the packed crowd partied the night away.

We had some lovely support from the national and regional media with gig reviewers from The Times, The Express, Classic Rock Magazine, Total Production International, Wales Online, South Wales Evening Post, Wales 247 and Buzz Magazine all heading along to take in the performance and, naturally, everything that the venue has to offer.

It was also incredible to see ‘From Swansea, With Love’, a show-stopping visual art project featuring words of love and welcome from well-known musicians, actors, comedians and presenters from Swansea and beyond, that we put together with our friends at Instruct Studio, popping up around the city, to celebrate its amazing redevelopment and mark the opening of the Arena which is at the centre of the £135m Copr Bay development.

Beautiful phrases, celebrating Abertawe and its music, sunshine, art, creativity, memories and, of course, the gilt edged coastline, have been contributed by Cerys Matthews, Keith Allen, Luke Evans, Michael Sheen, Rachel K Collier and, friend of the venue, Huw Stephens.

The visual art appears on poster sites, digital screens and hoardings across the city, in addition to screens at Swansea Arena and two hand painted murals from Swansea’s own, Fresh Creative.

Its launch also garnered huge press support on a national and regional level with coverage appearing in The Independent, Evening Standard, Wales Online, ITV.com and hundreds more news titles from around the UK, while Broadway and Hollywood’s Luke Evans was posting about it live on the day, and Cerys Matthews and Rachel K Collier also offered some lovely social media support.

We were over in Swansea for just a few days but we even had time to make a film with Huw Stephens which sees him give us a guided tour of the brand new Arena and the visual art project…

Our friendship with the lovely folk at ATG goes back a number of years now and we have been working on the communications campaign around the development of  Swansea Arena for nearly four of them… we just can’t wait to see what the future holds for this game changing entertainment venue and the good people of South Wales!

Celebrating 10 years of Midication

Last night we went along to Manchester Rap and R&B record label Midication’s label showcase at Northern Quarter venue Off The Square as it celebrated its 10th year.

Coming in hot off the back of an exciting 12 months for Midication, which has seen big successes for the label’s artists, both individually and collectively, with releases attracting support from major national radio stations and a 2-hour full-label show at Parklife 2021, the showcase, coined ‘Jingle Bars’ for the festive season, featured incredible live performances from D Jordan, JSD, Persia, Prima and RJ.

In addition, the label was celebrating the brand-new music videos that dropped in November from D Jordan for his new track Stunt Hard (FREESTYLE) and JSD’s latest single Back in the Mix.

Founded by JSD and Nika D of Virus Syndicate in early 2012 as an outlet for their music, Midication has since released music by Lady Leeshur, Paigey Cakey, Dope DOD, Son Of Kick (aka Born Dirty), Virus Syndicate and Dyno, plus many more.

Over the last decade the label has developed a core stable of Manchester artists as a result of JSD fully taking the Midication reins, producing and engineering for local talent and organically developing a talented roster into a family of some of the city’s best rappers and singers.

JSD, real name David ‘Jay’ Hindley, has toured the world many times over while performing as part of the legendary Manchester grime group Virus Syndicate, with music featured in Hollywood movies including Criminal Activities starring John Travolta, high profile TV shows Skins and HBO’s The Leftovers and Euphoria, as well as too many computer games to list.

The multi-talented songwriter, rapper, producer and label boss recently released his debut album ‘Late Night & Wavey Lights’ and the autobiographical tale of hope, self discovery and growth following some tragic personal experiences was heavily supported by BBC Radio 1 Xtra and BBC Music Introducing, as well as pricking the ears of some major record labels.

With a recording studio based between Manchester City Centre and Cheetham Hill, JSD supports a thriving community of talented musicians; he co-writes, produces, mixes and masters for Midication artists, and has produced for renowned artists across the UK including Dibo Brown, Misha B, and many more.

When we announced the label showcase, it received some incredible support from Manchester’s media with pieces appearing in About Manchester, Manchester’s Finest and The Manc Audio, plus more.

We’re proud to be friends of the Midication family and based on its top tier reputation, coupled with electric performances we saw on the stage last night, we cannot wait to see what the future holds for this stable of ridiculously talented Manchester artists.
